Tips

Start from the LOT vowel; use the tip of your tongue to follow through to a dark L, bringing the lips into a /w/ shape.

Tongue. Starts back and down, in the LOT position, then moves towards FOOT.

Lips. Rounded, then moving inwards towards the FOOT position.

Watch for

• Use a dark L at the end: say goal /ɡɒʊɫ/, not /ɡɔlʲ/.
• Keep the glide and the dark L: say cold /kɒʊɫd/, not /kɔld/.
• Keep the glide: old /ɒʊɫd/, not /ɔld/.
