You don’t need to move the tongue back; you can use the lips to perform this vowel.

Tongue. Mid-range, central.

Lips. Relaxed, then moving inwards towards the FOOT position.

Examples

Watch for

• Start from schwa, not Russian “о”: say go /ɡəʊ/, not /ɡɔ/.
• Glide to /ʊ/: say home /həʊm/, not /xɔm/.
• Don’t say “оу” with round lips throughout: no /nəʊ/.
