Terms & conditions

Effective 8 November 2026

James Leyshon T/A The Pronunciation Refinery provides the course, learning materials, access and product-level support. Purchases use Stripe Managed Payments, with Stripe acting as merchant of record for the payment transaction. These course terms sit alongside the transaction terms presented by Stripe at checkout; the relevant Stripe contracting entity is identified there and in your transaction records.

1. What you are buying

Personal, non-transferable access to the Modern RP pronunciation lessons, workbooks and Tools included in your chosen plan. The order summary must state the plan, access period, any feedback services, total price including applicable taxes, billing interval and renewal terms before you pay. Standard: £24 monthly or £179 annually. Premium: £49 monthly or £399 annually. Founding membership: £129 annually, renewing at the same price. The free taster needs no card. Premium includes personal feedback and a monthly check-in; the precise arrangements must be made clear before purchase.

The final checkout must show the amount payable, including applicable tax, before you place the order. Stripe Managed Payments determines covered tax treatment from the product and your location; the displayed currency and total control the transaction, not a guessed tax rate in these pages. Paid membership contracts must be made by someone aged 18 or over; a parent or guardian may buy for and supervise a younger learner. Premium is offered on this site: it includes personal feedback from James and a monthly one-to-one check-in. Contact James to arrange it; the format, duration, available slots and feedback turnaround must be made clear before buying Premium. If the promised service cannot be supplied, we will offer an appropriate alternative or refund, without limiting statutory remedies. No particular examination, employment or accent outcome is promised.

2. Access and technical requirements

You need an internet connection, a supported modern browser and an email account for sign-in. PDF materials require a PDF reader; video and audio need a device that can play them. Third-party media availability may vary by country. Tell us about a compatibility problem before buying.

The course is designed for the latest two main releases of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a supported desktop, tablet or phone. Browser settings or older devices may affect media and IPA rendering. You need internet access, a PDF reader for workbooks and audio/video playback for those materials. Downloads are for personal study, not redistribution. We provide necessary security and compatibility updates for the paid access period and any further period required by law. We do not promise a permanent right to future features. Contact us before paying if you need a particular accessibility adjustment or compatibility assurance; we will explain any known limitation and will not use that limitation to avoid statutory rights.

3. Payment, renewal and ending renewal

Paid monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically at the interval and price shown in your order until cancelled. Cancel renewal through Account → Manage subscription, or contact us if you cannot use that route. Normally access continues to the end of the paid period. Cancellation rights and refunds are separate from switching off renewal.

We will give clear advance information about material price or service changes and any right to cancel; we will not apply an unspecified unilateral price change. The published founding price is £129 per year, renewing at the same price; we honour that promise. We will give at least 30 calendar days’ email notice of a proposed material change or any permitted future renewal-price change. A change will not increase the price of a period already paid for. Changes are limited to legal requirements, necessary security/technical adjustments or clearly explained improvements; we will not use a general power to remove the essential paid service. If a material change disadvantages you, you may cancel before it takes effect without a penalty and receive a proportionate refund for paid service we will not provide. Urgent legal/security action may require shorter notice; we will explain promptly.

Stripe Managed Payments handles payment collection and transaction-level support, fraud prevention and disputes. It calculates, collects and remits sales tax, VAT or GST where its indirect-tax service covers the transaction. Tax treatment depends on the product and your location; the final total, currency, billing interval and renewal terms must be shown before you pay. Stripe sends transaction-related receipts, invoices and refund notifications. James remains responsible for providing the course and responding to questions about lessons or access.

4. Your cancellation and refund rights

Read the refunds and cancellation policy before paying. UK consumers normally have 14 days from the day after contracting to cancel a distance contract. Digital-content cancellation rights can be lost only after the necessary express consent, acknowledgement and supply; simply opening an account or accepting these terms is not enough.

Any separate service elements, such as personal feedback, have different early-performance rules. Starting a service does not automatically remove all cancellation rights. Any voluntary guarantee is additional to statutory rights.

5. Fair use and our responsibilities

Keep your login secure. Do not share paid access, redistribute workbooks or recordings, sell the materials or interfere with the site. Copyright remains with its owners. You may use permitted downloads for your own learning.

Digital content must be of satisfactory quality, fit for a particular purpose made known and accepted, and as described. Services must be provided with reasonable care and skill. Where the law provides repair, replacement, repeat performance, price reduction, refund or compensation, these terms do not remove those rights.

We will respond fairly to significant outages or changes. Suspension for misuse must be proportionate; we will explain it and offer a chance to resolve it where appropriate. Email [email protected] with your Account email and a description of the problem. We aim to acknowledge complaints within 5 working days and give a substantive response within 14 calendar days. If more investigation is needed, we will explain why and give an expected resolution date. Data-rights requests have their separate UK GDPR deadlines, normally one month. For a minor breach of these terms, we normally explain the issue and give at least 14 days to put it right. Immediate, proportionate suspension is reserved for credible fraud, unlawful redistribution or a serious security risk. If we stop the service when you are not at fault, we refund the unused paid part, subject to any greater legal entitlement.

6. Liability, complaints and disputes

Nothing excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for fraud or death/personal injury caused by negligence, or limits your mandatory consumer rights. We do not use an “as is” disclaimer to avoid our legal obligations.

Contact us first if you wish, but this does not prevent other remedies. If a complaint cannot be resolved, we will provide information about any applicable dispute-resolution arrangements as legally required. Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is not automatically compulsory for this kind of course. Nothing here requires you to use ADR before going to court. When we give a final complaint response, we will identify any ADR or other arrangement available under an applicable legal, contractual or scheme obligation. We are willing to consider independent mediation on a case-by-case basis; we do not claim membership of an unverified scheme. Stripe’s transaction-support or dispute procedures may also be available for payment matters, without replacing your legal rights.

English and Welsh law applies subject to mandatory protections in your country of residence. Consumers can use the courts available to them under applicable law; these terms do not force every consumer to litigate only in England and Wales.

7. Account information

See our privacy notice and cookie notice. We will provide the order and required legal information on a durable medium, such as email. A future terms update will not silently rewrite an existing paid contract.
